Show I A A Visit to the V Volcano Kilauea t BY P A YODER I of September 10 we had barely barel time enough to dispose dL pose of the baggage and get to the Steamship com compan pan s wharf before the little steamer Kinau at 12 1 noon left for tor a number of ports on Islands lying to the southward going as far tar as Hilo on the Island of Hawaii Though much we may mo havo have wished to have ave a little breathing spell spoil at Honolulu before starting on this side trip we Wo had to choose between going now or never neer as this steamer sails only once a week In Inthe Inthe Inthe the consequent con rush to get bet ready roady wo we had llad the opportunity to get the full ben benefit benefit of the oppressive tropical heat The Leper Colony I The Island IHland of the first that we w e sight comes to view before we have proceeded far from Honolulu Our I steamer doe does not call at any port on this island We remember it mainly from accounts of the leper colony on its north shore There is art an excellent nat natural natural natural ural isolation there where a broad flat fiat peninsula projects out into the ocean and precipitous cliffs cut off of the passage toward the Interior or along the coast from this secluded spot If It a leper is discovered in any of the Hawaiian IsI Islands ands he is brought by boat to this col colony colony colony ony never to return to outside civilization tion Uon But here to wear weer away his weary days ftp years until death relieves him of his c living grave This disease is 19 very cry er variable le in the course if runs Sometimes the patient lives to an old age and nd dies from front other natural causes The f ure a are e many man stories of heartrending scenes when the unfortunate victims are pulled pulled d away from home and friends to tu be transported t thither Incidents arc art related of noble sacrifices by devoted parent or child or wife or husband pre presenting themselves to go along with the loved one into voluntary exile and taking tak taking taking ing big uig chances of contracting the dis die disease disease ease themselves and never being per permitted to return to the outside world again gait However judging from accounts by our on the steam cr r this leper colony Is not such a dread dreadful dreadful dreadful ful place as we Wf are usually led to pic plc picture picture ture tur It The patients are provided with witha witha a comfortable home with plenty of good spend spending food and a small amount of 01 spend spending spendIng ing money mane which easily suffices for the luxuries that such a location might of offer offer offer fer If they the desire to engage in garden gardening ing ng to help them while away awa their time there is plenty of good land available They receive the best medical treatment that thit the science can an provide They have their own schools churches and other social organizations If children born of leprous parents parente are found to be free from the tho disease they can be removed I from the colony colon to the outside world Various charitable institutions have I stations here to help in supplying the tIle temporal or spiritual needs of the un unfortunates unfortunates unfortunates So well indeed are they ta taken taken taken ken care of by b the government and charitable institutions that we even hear it intimated that many a lazy islander islander ander desires to become a member of the tho colony for tor the tile life of ease that it affords and that positions as attend attendants attendants attendants ants are eagerly sought May ray we hope that the experts at the medical experiment experiment experiment ment station st at this colony will speedily find out the true nature of 01 this disease and find effective remedies or that the tl e careful isolation here provided may be put into effect the Ule world over oer and tho the disease thus ultimately and completely stamped out Landing by Small Boats During the night our steamer called at three ports on the island of Maul Maui Mauland and next forenoon at two ports at tho the north part of the west we t coast of 01 Hawaii and one on the northeast coast reach reaching reachIng reaching ing Hilo at 3 p m With the exception of Hilo all these landings were made In life boats bo ts while the steamer lay at anchor a little way out Sometimes the waves run quite high which made it interesting to watch them transfer passengers from steamer to lifeboat or vice versa This was es ea the case oh on the east e t or wind windward windward windward ward side of the tho Island of Hawaii Here the waves ran high and with the rock rocking rocking ing Ins of our steamer and the tossing of the life boat the transferring of the passengers looked at gat times very ver hazar hazardous hazardous hazardous dous to a novice at this tIlls style of seafaring seafarIng seafaring ing As we stood on the upper deck of the steamer and watched the proceed proceedings proceedIngs proceedings ings the small boat would at times be within eight feet of us then at times as asit asit asit it dropped down into the trough of the waves and our steamer rolled to the theother theother other side the boat would be twenty or more feet below bolow us The passengers stepping from the Inclined stairway of the steamer at an opportune moment would be safely landed on a seat In the I boat by the tho brawny brawn native oarsmen On our return voyage VO they the took on onboard onboard onboard board at one of the ports six horses horse Holding the horses head by b means of a halter they made him swim alongside I of the lifeboat out to the side of the steamer then while the horse was still I r i in the water they the swung swung a small chain under his body bod and by means of it drew drow a sling of heavy heay rope under the horses body bod and catching the two t O ends of this sling in a hook on a cable they ii started a windlass that hoisted the horse up out of the water dragged him up the side of the steamer and swung him in ht on the lower deck the whole op operation operation oration reminding us of the jie manner manger r hay is put away awa In the mow by b the use of ofa ofa ofa a hay sling A Panorama of Beautiful Scenery The general aspect of the island of Hawaii is remarkably different oh on Q l the tho windward side sido from that of or the lee leeward leeward leeward ward side and already here wo we ob observed observed served what was still more strongly Impressed upon us as we traveled over ocr the Island viz vb that our judgment re regarding regarding regarding garding these islands would be sadly erroneous if we based it solely upon a hasty glance over a single locality At Atthe Atthe the thc first two landings on the leeward side of Hawaii it impressed us as a relatively barren and unsettled waste or r rt t best but a rather i poor range country not much unlike the western plains or the Intermountain region of the United States Grazing being the principal industry here As however we rounded the northwest point and proceed proc Joo down the northeast coast it very quickly changes its aspect to that of i t J very thrifty agricultural community community community Now the slopes from the coast Inward to the foot of tho the higher r moun mountains mount mountains t are covered with large planta plantations plantations plantations of sugar cane and we pass sugar mill after sugar mill each surrounded by b or adjacent to a village of small la Ja laborers borers cabins with planters residence school house and sometimes church building not much unlike what we also see on the sugar plantations of Louisiana Among gulches and sea seashore seashore seashore shore cliffs cliff the tile denser native tropical vegetation tation was much in evidence The prevailing winds being the northeast trade winds it comes about that the east slopes sl pes of the mountains cool off ot the vapor laden air currents and wring out the moisture in abundant and often showers which bring forth the luxurious growth of crops and na native nativo tive tiye vegetation or form numerous lit little tle streams to run to the precipitous ocean cliffs and leap down in slender silvery water falls As Asfor Asfor Asfor for six hours we move along this northeastern coast about half a mile out at sea and sit leisurely on the steamers gently tossing deck drinking I in the magnificent scenery It seems j I more like viewing a grand panorama I prepared for our entertainment after some great artists fancy fanc The shift shiftIng shifting Ing scene cane before us constantly presents new features of interest The seashore was in the form of precipitous cliffs of one hundred to five fic hundred feet high At the bottom these th ese cliffs were washed I by b the blue ocean waves which broke into a white spray splashing up their faces t to heights of to fifty feet fret and meeting the numerous grace graceful graceful race ful waterfalls which descend In a single sin single single gle leap or glide noiselessly down the almost perpendicular slope from the notch forming gulches gulch S above Oto to the tho ocean below betow At the top the beautiful b green grem cane fields come down the gentle rolling slope to the very edge of the cliff Brightly whitewashed cottages sit picturesquely on this bench over oer overlooking overlooking looking on the one hand the great ocean ond and on the other hand the rich cane covered slopes Back up the I steeper er slopes beyond the two to ten mil miles of ot sugar cane fields we see na native tive Uve forests of small trees and dense Shrubbery Back of these the broad symmetrical cones of 01 Kea Ilea and Mauna Loa seem to continue the grad gradual gradual i ual slopes to tl where they thc lift their distant dis distant tant peaks high above the tho wreaths Of clouds into the wintry sky at from 1 to feet elevation They 1 seem to stand as quiet sentinels of the I Pacific showing their displeasure on rare occasions by belching forth smoke I and sulphurous vapors and blubbering over with lava When we e view I these mountains in sailing around I them or travel part way wa up their gently gen gently gently sloping sides we learn to know them and the several islands as quite a 3 different thing from the little fly flyspecked flyspecked specked dots by b which in our school schoolboy schoolboy boy bo drys dys we learned to locate them on the tile maps on the Tropic of Cancer and out in the midst of 01 the Pacific ocean We find that the island of Hawaii h is by ninety miles In extent with the other seven seen Inhabited InhabIted inhabited Islands of the group really con constitute constitute constitute a large territory and It is dif difficult difficult difficult to realize that we are isolated out here with over 2000 miles of ocean between us and the nearest mainland mahland At Hilo Landing at Hilo we are In the midst of tropical vegetation more luxuriant than at Honolulu H being better watered The percentage p of in the population lation is so great that it seems we must have hae dropped down Into a Chi Chinese Chinese nese 01 of Japanese village Instead l or of United States territory Most rost of the shops along the business streets are kept b by Many are engaged In gardening and as a rule have ad adjacent adjacent where wh re rethe the fine macadamized government highways are narrowly hemmed In by extensive sugar cane fields fieldsOn fieldsOn On to the Volcano The great attraction of Hawaii and indeed that for which the entire group of islands Is most mot noted In tourist cir clr circles cles is the volcano of Kilauea the worlds greatest living volcano and andas ands as s the route to it also takes us through one of the tile largest and richest sugar plantations on the island the Olsa plan plantation plantation plantation tation we eagerly grasp the opportunity ity to make a trip to this attraction That there are other claims to greatest volcanoes does not detract from our interest since In tourist liter literature literature literature of different nt countries numerous such claims may be found That this I living volcano at present leads a very quiet life Ufe we soon found out on our visit Isit to it From Hilo it Is miles to the volcano miles mUes of this distance Is made by b a railroad which passes through smaller banana plantations as well as through some dense jungles of native nathe vegetation These jungles are rapidly giving way to expanding cane fields and It Is surprising surprising surprisIng ing to note areas ar as are being brought under cultivation Being on the eastern castern slope the vegetation is very luxurious which also shows its effect In abundance of ot weeds on these planta plantations plantations plantations Much labor mostly Chinese and Japanese is employed on the cultivation and handling of these crops In the newer cane fields banana sprouts are bitant prices for stage fares saddle horses guide service and hotel accommodations accommodations accommodations it tends to develop walking habits that add greatly to the value of such a visit as well as independence on exploration trips and moderation In the number of meals eaten What though an all afternoon rain overtake him With vigorous exercise a mild mUd shower bath is very enjoyable The
