Show LATEST DIMES. GENERAL. POLITlCAli REVIEW. Dciuocrulfc Dh nee ri"i autl Re public tut Hopes. Tlie l'resitlent nul Conkllo lluyee a itluu ol fleace. New York, 6. The Tammany triumph tri-umph in the state convention, though very unpalatable to Tilden'a friends on one side, and the anti-Tammany John Morrissey crowd on the other, iB likely to cause no serious defection from the democratic ticket, except among the Germans. The greatest danger which it threatens to the democracy is the loss of the state senators sen-ators in thiB city, in favor of the Conkling republicans, thus lessening the democratic chances of electing Conkling's successor. The chief significance sig-nificance of the refusal to nominate the old state officers is in the lac t that it puts the party control here in the hands of the wing opposed to Tilden'a nomination for the presidency in 1880. It is also believed to be a settled set-tled (act that Tweed will be set free soon after the election. It does not follow that John Kelly's administration administra-tion of Tammany is to repoat the corruption cor-ruption of Tweed's regime. Kelly has done much to purify Tammany. He is personally free from reasonable suspicion of corruption, and his efforts are in the direction of honest government, govern-ment, even though prty exigencies do uot always permit him the choice of the worthiest instrumentalities for insuring it. His anti-Tammany opponents op-ponents on the other hand were heavily weighted in the view of the country members of the convention, by the fact that their fight waa led by a notorious gambler, whOBe daily life and business were in open violation of law. Hence it is that the row in the convention will have such a little effect on the general canvass. The Staats Zeitung. which has great influence with i German readers, squarely urges a bolt from both the democratic and republican Btate tickets, aud voting for anew coalition ticket which shall give the dissatisfied elements in both parties an opportunity oppor-tunity to show thoir strength for effect upon future conventions. Its dissatisfaction dissat-isfaction chieQy is with the republicans republi-cans for their non endorsement of HayeB, and with the democrats for sustaining Tammany. It is getting to be understood -that President Hayes counsels against the proposed meeting here to protest against the action of the late republican republi-can state convention. He urges that if held it should be free from all indication indi-cation of vindictivenees towards Conkling. Conk-ling. While it is his firm purpose to disregard the senator's attempt to dictate his policy in regard to civil service appointments or anythg els-e, he prefers conciliation in Iia tilings not involving principle. While not intimidated by the senator's implied im-plied threats, he does not care to recognize them by a retort any more than by a proffered palacation having a firm belief that the people are in active Bympaihy with him. He is not troubled by any political conven tion's failure to affirmatively endorse en-dorse him. He patiently bides his time. , The new nominations fur customs cus-toms officers at New York will undoubtedly be sent to the senate early in the coming session, aud it is well understood that it Conkling hghLl thsm because of hos tility to tiie president, sufficie-jl Jem ocrats will sustain them to injure their confirmation, unless their moral unfitness is Bhown. Tneodore Raose velt is preferred by Evarts for collector collec-tor and General E. A. Merrttt for surveyor. Roosevelt is a gentleman of the highest character and social position and not identified with any political faction, nor orlensive to either side. Merritt was formerly a naval officer. The appointment would be a recognition ot the old liberals Ol the Greeley campaign, but he his widely popular. His reputa lion is irreproacuable, his capacity undoubted. The suggestion that Conkliug should be deposed from hia chairman-1 ship of Ibe commerce committee for his declared hostility to the president, as Sumner was from the loreign ufLur-j because of unfriendliness to Grant, receives no counteance from the president. Beside, Sumner had made an issue of veracity with Grant, while Conkliug has not made personal relations rela-tions with Hayes impossible. |
