At 12 o'clock last night the western abutment to the great iron bridge that spans the Missouri at tb ia point fell into the river with a terrible crash, carrying the entire fifteen foot wall and about seventy five feet of the embankment. A gradual sliding of the wall had been noticed lor forty-eight hours aud a force of men had been at work tearing tear-ing oil the wall all day that the long draw span might be cleared and escape the danger that threatened when the wreck should come. They succeeded in swinging the draw clear at 10 o'clock. At 12 o'clork a hugi mar?(! of heavy masonry and thousands ul cubic yards (if the earthworks ol the bridge approach were hurled into Iho Missouri river. The damage has been contiiied exclusively to the ahulmcnt. Everything elae la safe. A large force of workmen will he immediately put to work clearing away the debris. Ltie bridge officers promise that the dam.ige will be repaired in thirty days. |
