Show Lawyer Tanner and the Ogden Affair. Attorney Tanner of Ogden, to whom reference was recently made in these columns, concerning his being bouud over to await the action of the grand jury, for alleged aiding and abetting the forcible entry into possession of a certain piece of property, has the following letter in last evening's Junction: Oqdes, Sept. 20, 1877. Editor Junction : In looking over your issue of yesterday, yester-day, I notice a reference to myself in a manner which would indicate that I have been arrested. I am naturally averse to newspaper notoriety, but under the circumstances desire space enough in your columns to relieve tbe public from the inference which may be drawn therefrom. I am not conscious of ever having been arrested, but on the contrary have lived so far above the law that I have never been connected with legal proceedings in which I was personally interested even in civil matter to any extent worthy of mention. I appreciate the sympathy expressed in your notice of the malicious aflair which occurred in the commissioner's ' court on Friday laBt, by reference to which it may be seen that I was not j arrested, but forestalled, and deprived the conspirators the pleasure of that, the anticipation of which they enjoyed with Buch a relish and have to Btate in this connection that the aflair is a matter of no concern to me, any more than is their conduct in general, except so far as it causes me inconvenience. incon-venience. As to tbe parties: A reference to the dockets and calendars of courts will show botn tbe nature and extent of their practice, and they will probably proba-bly receive the attention they deserve when the proper time arrives, I have never used or procured, encouraged or assisted another to use any force or violence in entering upon or detaining any lands or other possessions of another, except in a manner allowed by law, all statements to the contrary notwithstanding; but I am engaged in some cases wherein such a question is involved, as well as the question of a fraudulent sale of properly to evade payment of just debts, which, if true, are transactions of the "other side:" but as the courLs are the proper places to adjust suoh matters, I have no desire to bring them before the public. Thanking you for the courtesy of your space, I am, Respectfully yours, Nathan Tanner, Jr. |
