This institute is one of tiie literary successes of the territory. Iho exercises exer-cises comprise a well blended selection of religious and secular sub jects, calculated to instruct and amuse tho young and improve the old and middle-acd. One good feature in its constitution is that ladies are admitted with all the privileges guaranteed to other members of the institute, and thev often take quite au active part in the exercises, thus participating iu tiie benefits and assisting to spread a wholesome iufiucucc in the labors of the society. At their recent election which toak placo on the 20th instant, the following follow-ing officers were elected by ballot: John Nicholson, president; Chas. W. Stuyner, first vice president; Chas. R. Savage, second vice president; Herbert Foulger, secretary ; James Y. MofJatt, assistant secretary; Chas. Sanson, treasurer; Reinhard Macser, librarian; Jos. Sharp, assistant librarian; librar-ian; and G. M. Ottinger, W. C. Dunbar, Dun-bar, H. Puzy, Robert Patrick, and Karl G. Maeser, directors. Tiie institute in-stitute is self-sustaining and has a library in connection with it. Tbo members number about one hundred, with a general attendance every Thursday evening. This institute having been in existence for over three years may ho considered as firmly established. |
