Patton, Pat-ton, register of tho land office at Salt Lake, General Maxwell, United States marshal for Utah, and other promi nnnt. (ipntilf eitirenq nf thd territory. They particularly desire to arrive at gome means by which the crime of polygamy may bo reached in the courts, and to this end propose a revision of the jury law by which polygamista shall be excluded as jurors, as under the present system, with Mormon polygamists in the jury box, it is an impossiblity to obtain convictions. The interview also related re-lated lo the suffrage question in Utah, the delegation contending that tho church leaders entirely control the ballot among the Mormons, many of whom would vote with the Gentiles if they would be allowed. The president expressed his sympathy sym-pathy for any movement tendiug to alleviate the present condition of matters in Utah and the evils spoken of by the delegation, aud assured them of his presidential aid in all laws passed towards that end. It is understood that Colonel Patton Pat-ton is to be appointed United States district attorney for Utah. |
