I Fireworks at Culler Bros. jelf Mammoth Mines. Tintic, July 20th, 1877. Editors Herald: Not being a conbtant reador of the Tribune I did not happen to sec the long article that camo out in the the above paper's isme on the 3d instant, or rather ihe article referred to came out in a supplement to that paper of that date. It gave a very lengthy account ol the moat prominent promi-nent mines ol tho Tintic district, but what I wish particularly to refer to here is one ot the writer's paragraph headed "A Rich Gold Strike" in the Mammoth Copperopolis mine. This rich strike is said to havetaken place at the time and under the management manage-ment of Mr. S. Valentine, as general superintendent, and Mr. Thomas Couch who was then superintendent of the mine. The writer says: "The miners say that Sam Valentine used to gouge out the rich ore at night, and pack it up iu barrels and ship it oil' as merchandise;" then the writer goes en to say that it was not likely that "Sam gobbled it all," hence it must be inferred that somebody else must have gotten money out of this gold ore that was gouged out at night and shipped in barrels. Now, the question arises, who were thoso miners who gouged out tho rich ore at night aud barrelled it? I worked in that mine and worked, loo, often in the night time, but I ii2ver heard nor saw anything of the rich strike of gold referred to. These statement are simply the production of the writer's own brain. They never had an existence in truth. I never would have uoticed these statement and would have let them go for what they are worth, if they had not reflected re-flected badly on men who were there working iu the mine. And another thing, 1 think it is a gross injustice to Mr. Thomas Giuch, who was superintendent of the mine, whose ability as a mining superintendent and a gentleman is second to none in Utah, and who, I know, suflered iu common with the men in the bad failure. The general superintendent, S. Valentine, is the man who ought to bear the turden of the failure. A Miner. SPECIAL NOTICE to Far-j Far-j mers, Sheep Raisers, Butchers, and others: Z. C. M.
