Show THE SEA SERPENT CAUGHT AGAIN. A letter from Rio says that the French bark Jiaicniere, Captain Johanot, arrived on March 31st last, and reports speaking tho whaling ship Ringold oil Trinidad, about forty miles south of the island. The captain cap-tain and crew of the whaler were in a great state of excitement, having had three of their best boats 6tove by a strange monster, which they finally captured by firing bomb lances into its head and body from the deck of the vessel. Tho French ekipper, who saw the monster, says it must have mcwured 130 feet in length, taking as a guide the length of ttie Ringold, which must havo measured 17o feet. They had tho creature triced alongside along-side and made fast with head and lluke chains, the same as used for whales. In nppoarance it was somewhat' diflercnt from those so?n and described de-scribed by old salts. The head, which was the size of a large right, whale's head, resembled that of hippopotamus, with an immense mouth but no teeth. The neck was probably fifteen or twenty feet in length, and not more tban ten or twelve feet in circumference. Where it joined the body were whatappeared to be two large fan-shaped fins or flippers, with five huge clawson each, measuring at leaBt four feet, and curved like the talons of an eagle. Just ait of the fins tho body beuan, running at least ouo hundred feet, tapering to a point like a marlin spike. The eyes, which were a little larger than those of a horse, had a projection over them which probably acted as a shield. Iu appearance they resembled half a clam shell, and the animal no doubt had the power of dropping this shield as a protection and guard to its optics. The skin, which was the color of an elephant's hido, was thick and quite tough, and it was fortunate the Rmgold's skipper had tho improved bomb gun and lance, or he might have fared worse than he did. He stated to Captain Johanot that he intended, if possib.'e, to -tow the monster into Rio Jansira, and communicate com-municate with his owners. If they deemed it expedient a steamer would he chartered, and he would have the nondescript brought to the United States for exhibition, when scientists can gaze and wonder if such things can be. The master of the Rinyold thinks if he succeeds in carrying out hii object, it will not him more than half a dozen whaling voyages. Boston Bos-ton Glebe. |
