Show When the Tribune announced iU New Year supplement the Herald was happy in the belief that that journal intended to do a good thing for its subscribers and the public; but wheu the sheet appeared, on examination exami-nation ol it showed that it was a fearful fear-ful aud wonderful production. Making Mak-ing all allowances for tho difficulties in gathering and compiling the information, in-formation, the best that cau be said of it is that it was a strango medley of stale facts, collected from various easily attainable sources, such as directories, di-rectories, newspaper files, old mining reports, etc. Very little of the information infor-mation was made up to date, and the grossest errors and inaccuracies could bo easily detected in nearly every part of it. Tao Herald, however how-ever was uuwillicg to criticise unfavorably- even this poor show of enterprise, en-terprise, aud said nothing. Now the Tribune claims that it suuk "the Herald clean out of sight" in its Huge holiday eftort. Tu9 Hekald publishes daily, weekly and monthlv. all the important reliablo statistical information attainable, such as the business of t :e railroads, mines and miuuf.iciaries, and does nt cousider it necessary to rehash this information informa-tion at the close of the year, or to republish re-publish columns of formal dlsariptions which have Iwn before the public for years. If this is what the 2Vi.Vi.-i- calls enterprise, it is welcome to re-! peat it daily, if it likes, but we hope, j for the sake of truth and its readers' , pationco, that it will hereafter aim at accuracy and ne:rs rather than attempt at-tempt to cover a lare spaco withon: respect to the truth, i uteres or novel-. ty of its muter. |
