Show The Pacific Mail Invest! gatiou Washington, 12. The ways and means committee this morning resumed re-sumed the Pacific Mail investigation. They examined Carson, book-keeper of Jay Ccoke & Co., who identified t;vo checks of $50,000 each of the i Brooklyn Trust company on the Marine Ma-rine National bank, payable to the order or-der of John G. Schumaker, endorsed by him, and paid by Cooke & Co. He also testified that on June 3d, 1872, a certificate of deposit was issued to Schumaker for $90,000, and returned June oth by issuing acertificate of deposit de-posit for $60,000 and payment of $30,000 cash. The $s0,0O0certilicate was paid June 7th. The books also showed that on June '3d, 1S72, the bank cashed a certificate of deposit of tho National Park bank, nf Now Yorb- in favor of VVm. S. King for $5,000. The money was paid apparently to John H. Rice, who was the last endorser. en-dorser. L. J. Davis, of Lewis, Johnson & Co., bankers, testified thata certificate of deposit for $10,000 of the Park National Na-tional bank, of New York, to the order or-der of Win. S. King, passed their bank June oth, 1872. Hamilton G. Fant, banker, testified that he did all he could to secure the subsidy, talked with members of congress, con-gress, and sometimes sent others to them; sent a man to Beck, but he did no good. Bock fought and voted against the subsidy throughout. Irwin Ir-win agreed to give him $12,000 for advocating the subsidy. Don Piatt appeared and declared that the $5,000 received from Irwin was a loan out of the latter's private funds, for which he gave his note, which he paid July 2d, 1S72. Witness Wit-ness declined to tell who paid the money for him, as it would involvo the exposure of private transactions having nothing whatever to do with the subsidy. The room was cleared, and the committee decided that Piatt should answer, and gave hina till Friday Fri-day to tell. Adjourned. |
