Show THE STOCK EXCHANGE. The Break Tliat Bursts the ftiiarpera. New York, 21. The greatest excitement ex-citement prevailed on the stock exchange ex-change this morning, and one time a serious paoio seemed inevitable. The scene on the flor at tbe exchange was most tumultuous, and tbe rush to veil stocks waa to great that prices dropped 3 aod 4 per cent, at a time till before half an hour of business had been over, Delaware and Hudson had declined 20 per cent, and the remainder ol the list all tbe way between 14 and 1 per cent. The men who are credited wilh tbia bear movement, are Jay Gould, James K. Keene, Rueell S.tge and AddiBOD Commack, aided by outside Bpe.u-latorB, Bpe.u-latorB, who rushed in and let their stock go at any price, fearing lest a general panic would result in wiping their margins out entirely. Many failures were expected from this great stock fall in prices, but up to the present only one has bees reported. Edward Livermoor, So Broad street, suipended this afternoon, aod notified the Exchange of his inability to meet his engagements. About the first call there was a sharp recovery cflO per cent, in Delaware and Hudson, and the general list rallied from 1 to 6 per cent., but this was succeeded by another attack shortly after midday, and quotalious again took a downward down-ward turn. Edward Livermore, who suspended thia morning, has been a member of the board for many years, and his house has always been regarded a sate one. It was explained at bis office that the cause ot the failure is due to a combination of circumatanceB likely at such a time, namely, a general decline of 10 per cent, and indifference on the part of customers to respond with promptitude prompti-tude on call. Livermcre is ft gentleman gentle-man of wealth, but preferred to cIceb his Joors rather than ecficr greater loss. He regards his suspension as only temporary, and will resume as soon as tbe flurry ia over. His representative rep-resentative waa unable to give an estimate of bia liabilities or aseeets, owing to the wi!d condition of the market. |
