Show Tho Pacilie Mail IuveliC&lioii Washington, 30. The ways and means committee resumed the Pacific Mail investigation to-day. Jaa. D. Smith, director of the company since 1871, explicitly 'contradicted Irwin's statement imputing to him some knowledge of Irwin's employment by Stockwel, and Irwin's receipt or expenditure of money; witness never knew or heard that large sums of money were spent in Washington or elsewhere by Irwin until months afterwards. Stockwell informed him and other directors when the resolution resolu-tion passed authorizing the use of money in Washington, that the sum would in no event exoeed $10,000, and would be spend for counsel fees, preparation of statistics; etc.; that it I was with this understanding the action ac-tion of the executive committece was ratified by thu directors. Any and all expenditures in excess of this sum were without the knowledge or consent con-sent of the board of directors, and as far as witness knows, of any one of them. The sergeant-at-arms testified as to tho credits on his booki of members of congress during May and June, 1872, that only thirteen membera deposited de-posited sums exceeding $100. Only two of these exceeded $500, and neither of these two voted for the Pacific subsidy.
