Show THE SOL'THEBX 10TXTRY. Sania Clara Mines Barbee and Walker Rebuilding General New3 Items. Silt eh Reef, Utah, Sp. 15, r79. EJitors Herald: By kind attention of Giner.il W. B. Pjc;, we were invited, recently, to take a drive over to the Santa Clara mines, about seven miles nortbwett !of St. George, a place of which we had beard much bat bad never bek'- visited. The day wa sultry and road: j though generally bad, dusty emugb.l I but as a change the passage was very j agreeable, especially with a companion com-panion so well informed and versatile We called upoD friend Cobn at Sinta Clara and tested the quality of hi; excellent grapes and otoer lruit, and then passed on two miles north to the Santa Clara Mining Company's mines, where we found a small force at work. A shaft has been sunk 'thirty feet to theBilver bearing strata, which is in white sandstone. Tie v.in is five feet thick aod we!! miacied with a black shining substance sub-stance resembling coal, and also staked and mottled with red, yellow, orange, brown and other shades ol cr.tor very exactly resembling the rich or s of this place. We desceudtd trie shaft and entered the tunnel, bniu: worked along tbe angle of the lode, and hid an opportunity to observe tha varied character and many hues jof tbe silver-bearing strata, which, n hough we are not a mineralogist, nor yec a geologist, was very interesting. Assays from this vein of ore have yielded of pure silver all the way from , $4 to $1C0 per ton and it is confidently : expected by those best posted that one of much greater value will soon be reached. We should judge that there was abundance of ore in sight, in this mine, together with large bodies in a tunnel near, and in other openings to warrant tbe erection ol a mill. The company have five full claims aiong the Reef, aggregating a length of 7,500, the ore croppings being distinct dis-tinct the whole distance along the white Reef. It would be no stretch of imagination to predict that ere long this lacaHty will be astir with busy mining operations. We brought awy some handsome specimens for our coiner,, which, if not horn silver, sil-ver, bo much resembled it tnat a practical miner only can determine the difference. Success to the general and his coworkers. co-workers. Tbe burnt hoisting works on the EarPee and Walker Mine in this place are being rebailt, and it is said that steps will immediately be taS.sn to rebuild the mill entire. Mrs, Grant is rebuilding, on the corner of Main and Centre Street, a wooiien building larger than the one bnrnt, for store and restaurant. No rain, still hot and dry. Ague and fever aro appearing at Washington, Santa Clara, Rockvillo and some others nf tbe river settlements. Trade here is at a standstill. Market full of laborers and mechanics, es well as produce and goods. Butter and flour are scarcest commodities, the former bringing frcm 2-5c. to 3Sc. aud the last oc. to 6c. per pound. |
