Show XKW SCHOOLS. Two new district school Were started recently, alter a leDgthy vacation, vaca-tion, in the Ninth ar.d Tenth wards, respectively. In the latter a now building, well-lighted and "lofty, hss ju9t been completed, fitted up with new dedks, and made quite comfortable, com-fortable, and aJpiua the very fine meeting houaa of that ward. The design de-sign in erecting thie building has been to use it exclusively as a schoolhouse, and to such purpose it will be devoted. Notwithstanding the fact that the school bis boon running but one week, there is already an attendance of over ninety pupils, which is a remarkably re-markably fine showing for bo chert a time. The scholars are all small and apparently nearly all pursue the earns studies. As to the attendance, that is already so large as to almost justify the work of increas ing mo accommoaauous, ana u toiB should prove to be, as it seems, but a commencement, an addition to the building will have to be made in order that the pupils may be accommodated. accommo-dated. Mr. Browning is the teacher, and apparently gives good satisfaction, satisfac-tion, and as the be&t way to secure a permanent Echool ia first to secure a good teacher, it seems that the trustees of the Tenth district havo at least ob tained this qualification. For year the district has labored under serious difficulties in school matters, and notwithstanding the strenuous efforts of a few, these efforts until the present time have failed to produce any very good results. Now, however, the thing appears in a new light, and the attendance of pupils at the end of the first week gives evidence of the willingness of the people of the district in general to help the matter along in a substantial way. This may really be looked upon as the beginning ol the school in that district and as Buch i the prospects are moat gratifying. The plan of operation is, that the trustees hire a teacher and charge small tuition fees about one-half the general rates making up the balance of the teacher's salary from the territorial terri-torial appropriation, thus giving the attending children the full benefit pro rata of eaid appropriation and easing the burden on the parents. The Ninth district school has been in operation, under the present ays-tern, ays-tern, two weeks. The trustees have started an entirely free school, paying the teacher's salary from the appropriation, appro-priation, and inviting the children cf the district to attend free of oharge. The roll embraces the nameB of over sixty attending scholars. The teacher, MisB Scribner, is a lady who has apparently ohoaen the right calling in life and possesses a manner that commands com-mands the respect of the pupils and implants a love for the studies in her system of imparting information. The schoolhouse is neither commodious nor well-furnished at present, but the lady has been promised that new seatB and desks will soon bo forth coming. Both Mr. Browning and Mies Scribner Scrib-ner evince good governing qualifications, qualifica-tions, and have impressed the ohildren of their schools with a noticeably good system of quietude and order, which will make their progreai in study much more easy and rapid than it would be otherwise. The attendance in the Ninth and Tenth district is aDectcd some by childrfiu being seut to the Mission schools on account of those formerly kept in ibe district not being above ' mediocrity, but its ".he present good qualities become more generally known the attendance will evidently enlarge as the public spirit and enter-; enter-; prise of the citizens grow, and interest jin school matters is manifested. |
