The controversy in this cast relates to the title to certain lands in Santa Clara county, Cala. The judgment judg-ment of the lower court waa affirmed. Field delivered the opinion. A ripple of excitement occurred in front of the Ehbitt bouee today, which, at one time, bade fair to terminate ter-minate in a fit fight and caning melee, between William Gouverneur Morris, Bpecial agent of the treasury, and Colonel DeAhna, ex collector of customs for Alaska. It appears that a considerable portion of the appropriation appro-priation made by tho last congress for the payment of DeAhna's claim is kept back by tho troaEury department upon a report from Major Morris that DeAhna owes government a balance. This report, and Borne intimation in it that DaAhna was a defaulter, led to a lively exchange of words between them to-day. DeAhna denounced MorriB as a scoundrel, liar and coward. Morris reciprocated with similar endearing epithets. CantB were raised in a ihreatening manner and blows were momentarily expected ex-pected by an admiring crowd of onlookers, but the parties separated before tho war proceeded farther, and no one was hurt. |
