Government, represented by Lord Crancrook, strongly opposed it, and the second reading waa defeated by a vote of 101 to 81. The Prince of Wales, the Duke ol EJiuburgh, and Bishop of Ripon voted with the minority, and fourteen of the bishops with tho majority. In the bouse of commons, a declaratory de-claratory resolution introduced by Farran Hershsl, liberal, iu favor of abolishing the actiou for breach of premise of marriage, except in rases where actual pecuniary loss has been incurred by reason ol the promise, waa carried by a .vote of ICG yeaa to G9 nays. |
