The directors of the Northern Pacific- railroad met yesterday and awarded a contract for building tbe first 100 miles of the road, west of tho Missouri river, to Walker & Clark. Walker is a resident resi-dent of Peekakill and Clark lives in Montana, A great many contractors were present at tbe oihees yesterday, and the disappointment set very visibly visi-bly on their countenances. The company com-pany will pay tbe contractors monthly, in cash, reserving 15 per cent, until the completion of the contract. The cross lies, railroad iron and fastenings will be furni:hed by the company, and the 100 milefi of tho road are to be in running order by November 1st, '79. No atttmpt will be made ut present to bridge the Missouri river ut Bismarck, but a gcod ferry will be established. Beginning at Heart River valley, opposite Bismarck, the line, aa at preseDt surveyed, runs nearly west to tbe Yellowstone, at the mouth of Glendive'B creek, which is about thirty milts below Powder river. The oounlry is a rolling prairie, said to be well supplied with good water and graaa. The on ly place where tbe line is Bitualed upon clay land is in the immediate vicinity of tbe crossing of the Little Missouri ; Along Heart river waters, tbe head ul Knife river, Little Missouri aud tbe beads and upper portion of Glendive'a creek, the timber i6 abundant, consistiuf; ot cair, ah, elm, cottonwoocl, etc, ami towards the valley of the Yellowstone there ate large bodies of cedar Coal is found at a distance uf twenty-five mil- from the Missouri river, aud Irom that point westward coal voins crop out on neaily every stream crossed. |
