The design is to, in a measure, remove re-move the obstructions that poverty placea ia tho way of the successful study of art, and to give the poorer ladies with ambition and a relish for better society, the advantigeB of eucb association. Any lady of good social character can becouio a member of the aociety, which undert ikes, by a system of rent) aud loan;?, to supply each member with materials and advice ad-vice for tho Btudy of a:t, science, English, German and French literature; litera-ture; to arrange for the exchange of booka, paintings, photographs and other objects designed to assist in lboi cultivation of the mind and heart. Tho members havo the right to com-1 muuicate with tho officers, who are required to give advice, instruction and nsBiatanco in their respective dopartments. The society ie said to number over 1,000, umong whom are many girla and ladies who ore takiog regular courses of Btudy, and aro buo ceeding admirably. The organization, though comparatively new, having been in operation oniy a few months, haa already accomplished much good. It is a movement in tho right direction, direc-tion, and benefits two classes who are in need of tho occupation and assistance as-sistance furnished. The benevolent and industrious among the wealthy Gnd an opportunity to exercise their minds and bodies in generously and ucefully assisting their leas fortunate sisters, and the latter receive cultivation, cultiva-tion, improvement and poliSa that they could not otherwise obtain. |
