It appears that deeds to lands in north Arkansas and southeastern Missouri have been torged for some years past, and agencies for this work were established estab-lished in Cincinnati, Pittsburg, l'uiia-delphia. l'uiia-delphia. New York, and Manchester. England. It is estimated t:iat deeds to tho amount of over 1-,liA.V acres of laud have been forged and disposed of, the valuation being i-o,-OOO.iXVor &V.0VO.O0O. T:ie laud operated upon is owned by uon-resi-deuts, and as the records were mostly destroyed during the civil war, the ring had every facility to carry ol;: the enormous swindle, and the deeds have Wen sold all over the United States and in England. T.ie grand 'ury of Shannon county, Missouri. has indicted Dr. T nomas K. Sherman, David L Bingham and James L. Lawton for complicity in the frauds. Lawton seems to be the executive man and operated extensively in England. |
