Show ALABAMA. j Lftutlaulet Williams Keeping op the Excitement. ! Chicago, 30. The Tribunes Washington Wash-ington special says although advices from thooughly reliable Republican sources nave demonstrated tht.t the reported outrages in Alabama have been greatly exaggerated, it appears to be the purpose of Attorney General Wslliams to still keep up tho delusion that a reign of terror exists in that State. He gave to the city press today to-day the substance of a complaint made by a colored candidate for the legislature in Madison county, setting forth a terrible state of affairs precluding preclud-ing the possibility of a fair election. This was forwarded here by the United States .Marshal at Hnutsville, who, in transmitting it, says that "every species ot intimidation is resorted re-sorted to to drive Republicans out of the Ssate," etc., and containing tbe same old story that has crown so common of late from such sources. For a time it was feared that those representations were correct and just, but time has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the observers here that they were in mott cases gross misrepresentations, wilfully made lor i partisan purposes, by the carpet-bagging element of the South, who see that with the unpopularity that attaches at-taches to them as advoctes of the civil rights bill they are certain to be defeated in theiraspirations for office, unless they arc aided by Uui'-ed Suites j soldiery. |
