Show Too Much Opium. About 9 o'clock last evening a gentleman gen-tleman living opposite the Townsend house, South Temple street, discovered discov-ered a Chinaman lying on his premises, premi-ses, and ae he supposed, drunk. He endeavored to arouse the Celestial, and failing, reported to the police, who repaired to the epot, where they found the Chinaman unconscious from the inordinate use of opium. The box which had contained the drug was by the fellow's side, and his fingers were covered with the narcotic. nar-cotic. The Chinese doctor who at- j tends to the ailments of his countrymen country-men in this city, was soon at the scene, and actively endeavored to re-suscitatehis re-suscitatehis fellow citizen, but without effect; and the sick man was carried to the city hall, where he was waited on by Dr, Benedict, who at once pronounced pro-nounced the case fatal. The unfortunate unfor-tunate heathen lingered until near midnight, when his spirit look its flight for the flowery realms, where Confucius i3 presumed, to dwell. The name of deceased was Ah Fook. He recently arrived in the city from the west, and had not been able to obtain employment. His Chinese friends say it was not the poor fellow's intention to destroy himself. He accidentally took too much opium, and then continued to take it. It is estimated that he swallowed swal-lowed enough of the poisonous drug to have killed four well regulated and properly constructed con-structed Chinamen; while had the amount been portioned out equally among a dozen ordinary christians, and Bwallowcd by them, the chances would have been two' to one against their recovery. |
