Show BENDER IS BENDER, THE OLD MAS .IDEXTIFIKD AS THE IMTER I All I LI AS OF KVNS4S Bl'TCIIEKS. He Bt-Ovmes more Communicative. The Junior Bender also Captured ar.d will be Brought to this I'ity. Yesterday the scene around the city jail was ono of intense excitement and clamor, tho object which drew the crowd to that point being the suppo ed old man Bender. At early morn people began to flock to the city hall, and by 10 a.m. the importunities of the crowd to see the greatest murderer of modern times became so great that the jailer to quiet and gratify them threw open the jail and exhibited tho accused. The curiosity to see the author of so many crimes was not confined to tho male portion of mankind only, as tho ladies were seized with the same desiro and during the day dozens of the we akcr sex called at the classic establishment establish-ment and gazed at the man if he be Bender who has done enough in this world to entitle him to a front seat during a portion, at least, of eternity, in the dominions of his Satanic Mnjesty. The old man was calmer yesterday yes-terday than on the day previous and talked with greater freedom and could be better understood than on the day of his arrival. He stated to a German who was in the cell with him for some ti mo that he had been engaged in , farming in Kansas; but said nothing else that would indicato that he was Bender. During the day two gentle-iuen gentle-iuen visited him who had known him in former years, and they both recognized recog-nized him as being the much sought after Kansas butcher. One gentleman, gentle-man, who was in the Pike county (111.) clerk's office in 18(36-7, Lmme d lately recognized tli3 accused as being the man who had taken out letters of administration in I'ike county, in the" name of John T. Bender, on the estate of his brother-in-law, one Schmidt. The gentlemen above made out the papers and saw Bender frequently during that year, ISii7, after which the latter moved to Kansas. former Indian agent of Kansas, who formerly knew Bender. says the right man is captured. With this strong evidence it can scarcely be doubted that tho great criminal, who lias eluded officers and detectives for the past year, has at last stumbled into the clutches of the law, and is now a prisoner in the city jail. One day, when the old man was in the Manti jail, Sanpete county, another an-other strange-looking German appeared appear-ed (.here, and asked permission to see the accused. His request was granted, and the two hail a long and confidential interview, Tho sherif!1 who bad charge of tho jail said the meeting of ths mea w;is most cordial and that they appeared to talk freely on a subject with which they were botli acquainted. The German left tqwu nejyt day as mystoriously as ' ho had appeared in it. The circum-1 circum-1 stance of his visit having reached the ears of one of the deputy sherifis of Sevier County, the latter concluded that the German stranger was young Bender, and started in search qfhitn. Ho followed, him to Nephi in Juab County, where he overtook and arrested ar-rested him. He is now there, and this morning Deputy Sherifis Farnsworlh and Foutz, of Sevier (,'ounty, go to bring him to this city. 'They expect to return on Saturday or Sunday.' Should these two Germans be the male portion of the Bender family, it would not be an improbable occurrence occur-rence if the female members of tho murderous quartette were discovered ere long in the vicinity. |
