Show Theatre. The theaire was well attended hist night, the occasion being the first appearance ap-pearance of Laura Honey Stevenson, and the production of her new play of "Cameron Pride." The lady was warm'y received, and, during the evening her singins, piano playing and acting drew frequent rounds of applause.. She has a highly cultivated cultivat-ed voice which Bhe uses with gocd effect,, and her musical selections were artistically rendered, twhile her lightning changes in the concert scene were marvelously quick and her songa characteristic and effective. If we were te criticise the lady at all, we should say that she introduced almost al-most too much singing, but that ia a matter of taste which we leave for the musical critics to decide. Of the play we have not Bpace to say much j we think it has many excellent qualities, and when it is pruned of ' come ' verbiage and cut down to a I reasona' le length it will play very j well, Of course it was all new to the ! actors last night, and some parts of it necessarily dragged. This of course will be remedied on another ! representation. Miss Steytnaon as j Katie gave evidence of pleasing dramatic dra-matic talent; she did all that was re-: re-: quired in the part artistically and without Btraining for effect. Miss Walters as Aunt Betsey had a strong 1 character part of which she took j every advantage, and whenever Bhe appeared on the stage the audience were convulsed with laughter. The other ladies and qenUcmen rendered their parts respectably, and the piece ! throughout went off very satis fac-. j torily. I "Cameron Pride" Viill be repeated j to night, when it will doubtless be j curtailed, so that it will play much quicker. Those who relish fine singing sing-ing and a pleasing and effective drama should visit the theatre tonight. |
