Theodore Tilton, has written a letter to the press de-. daring that after many opportunities for prosecuting him for libel have been can? fully avoided by Beechcr and his lriends, the present tardy indictment in-dictment procured by District Attorney At-torney Winslow, a member ot the Plymouth investigating committee can be attributed only tcTthe l'ict that the verdict oi the eomqiittee fails to J command popular credence. Tilton ! aolemly atlinns the literal and abto-1 lute jtruth of his charges agaitnit Beecher, and demands an immediate trial. , Plymouth Church woa crammed .0 its utmost capacity this morning, and there were as many on the out-aide out-aide unable to gain admittance. The church was opened at 'J. 30 a.m. for members only, and the newspaper men, and at 10 o'clock u few outsiders out-siders were admitted. Tne church was decorated with flowers aud evergreens ever-greens lrom the desk to thedoois and iu a style that was the very perfection per-fection of artistic taste. Beecher ascended to the platt rui at 10.30. Two or three persons attempted to get up a demonstration by clapping hands, but ft hush from the others checked them. The opening prayer was a masterpiece of pathos. It was ai appeal for rest to every heart oppressed op-pressed with tare nnd sorrow. Beecher then read the sermon on the mount, and after a hymn delivered a long prayer. The sermon was from the words, "Thy will be done." No allusion was made to the recent investigation. in-vestigation. Ex-Judge J. D. Morris, Til ton's counsel, says in corroboration of Tiltou's asserttd desire for an early trial of his case, that he (Morris) is confident that twelve men oannot be found in King's county to reject tha evidence which will be ofiered in behalf of his client. He says that he makes this statement with a lull knowledge thpt the court will leave out- as improper testimony the evidence evi-dence of Mrs. Tilton, Mrs. Bradehaw and Mrs, Morse. No obstacle will be placed in the wuy of an early trial by 1 Tilton. ' |
