"It was about six o'clock when justoppoaitc Long Henry Cre ?";. , that flows into the Ohio, two miles be low Aurora, I noticed a bright light along some bales of cotton in llit-aitcrpart llit-aitcrpart oi the boat. I hasleucd 1 the hpot, aud found them burnirg rapidly, and beyond the possibility u; immediately extinguuuing Litem. J hurried to the hurricane dock and gave the alarm to the pilot t'nat the boat was burning, and toid him to run ashore, The pilot attempted to do so, but the boat refused tn obey th htlm, henco I believed the tiller rope , was cut, and the lire was incendiary I work. Another theory is that a passenger dropped a spark from his pipe on a cotton bale. The boat , became immanagtible and drifted on ! a sand bar. The flames, instead of 1 spreading along the lower deck, shot up the cabin, the pilot bouse and then swept across the hurricane deck. The passengers were all aroused and the boats lowered and many were carried ashore, but others in their fright jumped into the water. Those who wero not drowned reached a safe landing place after drilling a long time with the current. Thero were nearly one hundred people on board, and but & small proportion of the number were actually lost. It is not known how many are drowned. It is reported the missing were seen by a person on shore after the disastor." |
