Show Theatre. It was gratifying last night to see so large an audience at the theatre, for the benefit of Pioneer Engine Co. No. 1, considering the storm that raged so fiercely during the day; and had Lie weather been favorable there is not a doubt that the house would have been crowded. The per formance, too, went off" excellently Mr. Sawtelle's Badger was'played admirably; ad-mirably; indeed it is one of the best things we have seen this gentleman do. Miss Walters, in the ungracious part of Alida, acted with her usual ability. Mr. and Mrs. Crosbie as Mr. and Mrs. Tuffy were lifedike portraits, por-traits, with a backing of Btreet walls and a setting of appropriate surroundings, surround-ings, includine the chesnut roaster. Mrs. Rea, Miss Adams and Mr, Wilton as Mrs. Fairweathet and her two children Lucy and Paul played carefully and well; while Mr. Thorno and Mr. Forster, two gentlemen gentle-men who are always reliable and always give satisfaction, acted with discretion and ability. The "boys run the machine," in reality, during the fire scene in the fourth act, and created a Bensation'. The dance and farce p:isscd off well. This evening Mr. John T. Raymond opens his engagement, appearing as Asa Trenchard in "Our American Cousin," and Hugh do Brass in "A Regular Fix." The gentleman during dur-ing his brief engagement here before made himself an immense favorite, and satisfied the theatre-going public jthat he was a comedian of rare tal-lents. tal-lents. Hi6 reputation in the charac-, charac-, tcrs in which he appears to-night is i very high; and he will be supported by strong casts. |
