Show IT AH WESTERN RAILWAY. The S. L., S. V. & P. K. is Defunct, but its Contemplate! Work will be Performed 1 j The Iron Horsa to Whistle in Tooele County Within Sixty Days. Mr. 11. P. Kimball returned last evening from a somewhat protracted business trip to New York and the principal cities of the E ist. The business bus-iness which called Mr. K. henco was the adjustment of certain railroad afiairs.and in the settlement of which we learn that he was successful. In this connection it is proper to detail some facts and speak of an enterprise en-terprise which is destined to give increased in-creased importance to our growing Territory, and give to our western mining districts and agriculturalists the benefits of a railroad through their country. We refer to the UTAH WESTERN RAILWAY, a recent incorporation, whose immediate imme-diate object is to open up Tooele County. It wiH bo remembered that the Salt Lake, Sevier Valley Pioche Railroad Company, whoso trumpet was loudly sounded a couple of years ago, proposed to construct a line of railroad from this city to somewhere in the south-east, probably Pioche, J ria Tooele, Stockton, East Canonjand so on down through the western and southwestern chain of valleys. - Grading Grad-ing contracts were let, iron was bought, engines and cars were bargained bar-gained for and sent here, and for a time the enterprise prospered. About twenty-two miles of grade was completed, com-pleted, and so confident were certain of the company's officials that the road would be built, that PASSES, OR "DEAD HEAD" TICKETS were freely issued. However, for reasons which need not be alluded to here, a change came over the ahairs of the company. All at once work ceased, and the S. L., S. V. & P. Ii. R. died. Probably we ought not to use the word died, for although it was virtually dead the corpse exhibited ex-hibited a faint appearance of life, but was without animation. Tho company com-pany had a grade on which to lay ties and iron, but they had not the ties or iron, nor had they rolling stock; neither had they money with which to purchase these essentials. All of these railroad necessaries which had been bargained for, aud some of which had arrived here, had passed hack into the hands ol the sellers or elsewhere because of the company's failure to pay for them. But the history of THAT RAILROAD FIZZLE is well-known in this region, and some of the chief actors are doubtless known abroad, as well as here. The Utah Western Railway has now stepped in to do the proposed work of the corporation whose names weio multitude; and we are assured tho former company have both the energy and money to cany the enterprise enter-prise to a successful completion. They have "bought out" tho old corporation entire, and will lay their track on tho erode of the latter. which is finished to Lake Point a distance of twenty-two miles. It was to arrange the sale that Mr. Kimball went East, he being a principal member mem-ber of the old. company, as he is also a chief mover and large stockholder in the new. Tho Utah Western have already secured the Bccossary tics for laying the road to Lake Point. The contract for rails to that point has also been closed, and shipments of iron from the rolling mills will commence com-mence this week, and continue at the rate of fifty tons a day until the contract con-tract is filled. Engines and several cars have been purchased and are now on the way here. Tho company expect to COMMENCE TRACK-LAYING within the next two weeks and are confident trains will be running to Lake Point by the first of November. Of the importance of a road through Tooele County wo havo neither the time nor space to speak at length this moniin, but will do so in future. However we will now say tbis, when track-laying for the Utah Western Railway begins tho Eiin of Tooele's prosperity will grow brighter. |
