Show Blacks versus Whiles. I New Orleans, 29. The Picayune, , this evening, reported that dispatches had been leceived from Shroveport stating that a largo body of armed j negroes had assembled at Coushatta, a town in the Bed liivor country, near Col tax, and that great alarm and excitement ex-citement prevailed among the whites, (iorernor Kellogg's private secretary, in reply to an inquiry of the Aeso-ciated Aeso-ciated Press agent in regard to the report, says it is not credited by the executives and that the only foundation founda-tion for it is that the sheriff at Coushatta Cou-shatta has summoned a posse of sixty-five sixty-five persons, fifteen whilo and fifty 1 colored, to defend tho parish officials in case of any attempt to force them to resign. Later dispatches front Shreveport this evening confirm the first reports , of trouble at Cou.Bhalta, and state that a courier who arrived at Shreveport this evening sayn ttio negroes are constantly receiving reinforcements from all quarters. The town is guarded by two hundred whites, who aik h' Ip. A courier Irom Minden, Webster parish, brings substantially the Bame report, forty men left Cotton Paine this morning for the scene of the conflict. Seventy men left Shreveport this afternoon, and more will follow to-night. Reinlorce-ments Reinlorce-ments have also gone from Minden. A letter from a gentleman at Robinson's Rob-inson's place says a conflict- is inevitable, inevit-able, and he thinks it cannot be de-: de-: layed longer than to-night. t The , black population of Red River parish outnumber the whites three to one. Later A dispatch from Shreveport Shreve-port says a courier from Coushatta, ijust in, reports that the troubles are ended and that the town is quiet. iThe whites arrested the sherifi and his deputy, and several other officials, and have them in jail. The negroes, being left without a leader, dispersed. One white and two blacks were killed. |
