Show Runaway. The quick tirre made yesterday by a black horse and a bay, before a light express or grocer's wagon, was very exhilirating. This team started from in front of the Des-eret Des-eret bank, or near by there, although not from the 13th ward grocery as stated by many, and went headloDg down First South street, or up it, possibly, pos-sibly, toward the theatre corner. At first, as the threatening waters of Lake Taggart met the dashing steed;, there was prospect for a sudden cessation of the show, but, with a plunge, a swim, and a struggle, the noble beasts crossed the dangerous waters, swamped the "Lidy of the Like," and dashed on as if running for a $7,000 purse at the autumn races. Just opposite the theatre, in the middle of the way, in front of the "Footlights," a huge water cart drove in sight making a daring dar-ing and desperate attempt to check the fiery chargers. In vain the endeavor. By a peculiar twist with a slight turn and a gentle elevation, the collision merely resulted in scattering the seat and a wheel of the flying vehicle, and the team, turning down First East street and into the vacant lot just back of the popular dentist's office, brought up astride a post. The horses were unharmed, the wagon was in smithereens, and the audience were elated. A daring bare-back out-rider, dodging about, now on one side, and then on another, first in front, and next behind, lent additional charm to the entertainment. The team had been left in charee of a boy who, trusting to their honesty, stepped out of sight, only a moment, just time enough to start the race. , |
