Show MAJ.-GE.XEBAL JOSEPH. HOOKES This dUtiozuiihed gentleman and gallant ofrjer wis among the arrivals yesterday morning, and we had the pleasure of an introduction to him through the courtesy of general Morrow. Mor-row. Had genera! Hooker been as i scared of confederate bullets as he expresses ex-presses himself lobe of the pencils of interviewers, he would never have won the soubriquet of "Fighting Joe Hooker;" Hook-er;" but though we did not interview him, in a technical sense, a very brief sketch of his highly honourable career : will not come amUs- I Major-General Joseph Hooker enter-, ed the army as colonel of California i volunteers and was soon appointed 1 brigadier-general of volanteers. He was in the battles of McClcllan on the peninsula; greatly distinguished himself him-self in the assault at South Mountain, and at Aotietam gallantly won the soubriquet of "Fighting Joe." He commanded the left gTand division of the army of tho Potomac at Fredericksburg Freder-icksburg , and on the retirement of Burnsidc he was appointed to the command com-mand of the army of the Potomac. His battle at Chaocellorville was virtually virtu-ally a defeat of the Union army, but the confidence in its commander was not shaken. Just before the battle of Gettysburg Gettys-burg he asked to be relieved from the . command of the army of the Potomao, Gen. Hallcck having refused to permit him to assume command of the troops at Harper's Ferry. Soon after he was assigned to duty in the west, with the 11th and 12th corps, and at Look Out Mountain covered himself and his oommand with glory in his fight "above the clouds." Soon after he asked to be relieved in oonsequence of some difficulty between himself and general Sherman. Tho record of general gen-eral Hooker is a reaord of much of the hard fighting of the late rebellion. Now he is a man of peace, of genial good nature, and a strong advocate of the election of Horace Greeley, for whom he designs casting his vote at the coming Presidential election. We bid general Hooker a hearty welcome to Salt Lako. |
