Show PREPARIXe FOB, 11 RE. Chief engineer of the firo department, depart-ment, J. D. T. McAIIUter, escorted us yesterday through the enirine room, the new sleeping room, and the quarters quar-ters for the men who sleep in the buildiog to be ready in case of fire. The new steamer "Pioneer" has been received by the city and turned over to the fire department, and for it a buildiog build-iog is to be erected of brick, with rock floor and iron roof, thus making it fireproof. But for the present a portion por-tion of the engine room will be set apart for the steamer so that it can be ran out immediately. The fire department had, previous to receiving the steamer, an engine oompany of thirty men, and a hook and ladder company of sixty men. They also had two hand eDgines, two hose carriages, a hook and ladder track, and now have, with the steamer hose, some 1,150 feet of hose, with all the paraphernalia in the way of buckets, Udders, etc. The eity is divided into two fire districtscast dis-trictscast and west, East Temple street being the dividing line. The temporary fire signals are : One stroke of the bell indicates a fire in tho north part of tho city; two strokes in the south ; three in tbo east ; and four in the west; the city hall being the central cen-tral point While one stroke of the bell preceding, will mark the first district, dis-trict, or east of East Temple street; and two strokes preceding tho sounds which indicate the point of the compass com-pass an interval of time between will mark tho second district, or west sido of the city. This is only a temporary tem-porary arrangement, and we presume will .be superceded soon by the regular telegraph alarm which is so easily managed and so effectual. Yosterday Mr. Dinwoodey was pre paring to put up the bunks for the men. An engineer will be engaged to take oharge of the ateamer; tho water io the boiler will be kept warm day and night; men will sleep on the premises ready at any hour, and we now can congratulate Salt Lake City upon having hav-ing a fully equipped fire department. |
