Inky blacl clouds, piled on top of the other.kept gathering for some time; they lookec fearful and were attracting genera! attention, when all nt once a portior of the blackest cloud in tho northeas began to Bhnpc liko a funnel with th the small end down and kept lengthening length-ening out, the point toward the earth until it came in contact with it, al which point it did not look largci than awhipstock, but as soon 03 ii struck the earth it commenced enlarging en-larging until it covered about fiftj yards and moved westwaixl at a skvn rate. It was a fearful sight. The centre of the column appeared to be tilled with water, while the outside was a whirlwind. In looking at it it appeared ns though it was tearing up everything in its path. Wo could sec something which looked like dirt ami dust boiling up on the outside of the centre column. At one time it came towards this city and everything became be-came excitement, but suddenly it changed its course nnd went west. Almost the entire population were out watching it. From this cloud we could see little streaks of jet black running' to the other clouds, which appeared to be feeders for this one. The others would gradually disappear, but this one kept as dense as at first. After it passed out of sight, tho sky in ILc ,,.nil lnmn rulvtLill,. ..In.,. tlie sun came out bright and shone through the mist in such a manner that it looked as though tho whole western heavens were on fire. We could see the red jets, which looked like fire, shooting up iu cery direction; direc-tion; it was a sight never to be forgotten forgot-ten ; as the sun sank out of sight the sky was again covered with clouds, but of a lighter description, when suddenly in the northeast, where the waterspout first appeared, a cloud made its appearance, which appeared appear-ed to be about as large as an acre of ground, of a bright green color, and hung suspended between heaven and earth in such a manner that it did not appear connected with the other clouds. After hanging motionless for a while it disappeared, after which wo had a terrific storm of rain and hail. The waterspout or whirlwind was in sight about half an hour. It passed alxmt five miles from this city, and we understand did a large amount of damage, but have not been able to get any particulars. |
