After the time- worn custom of heralding the day was ' indulged in. the people assembled at 10 a. m. as per appoiutment, under the spacious low cry, and listened attentively at-tentively to the following exercises : Pravcr by the chaplain, Elder John McNeil : reading of the Declaration of Independence, by Mr. James B. Forbes ; Historical Oration by the orator of the 1)i;i, Hon. L. E. Harrington; Har-rington; a spirit oil address by Mr. Wm. Greenwood. The programme was intersperced with semvs, music, recitations and toasts. The following, expressing the sentiment of the occasion : "The liberty lib-erty pole ! palsied be the hand which shall attempt to prostrate it:'' was ejven by Hon. L. E. Harrington.
