Show By W. U. Telegraph. THE If EL FAST RIOTS. London, 22. A special from Belfast Bel-fast last evening reports the condition of the city somewhat better. Encounters Encoun-ters between tho inhabitants had ceased, but the mobs and desperadoes were still engaged io wreoking houses. The losses to property holders is heavy. Yesterday Yester-day a detachment of police attempting to arrest persons firing from nouses into the street were fired at but escaped injury. Tho policemen returned the fire but with what effect is not known. It is believed, since the disorders commenced, com-menced, that several rioters have been killed and their remains secretly buried by their friends. It is decided to abandon all demonstrations of welcome wel-come upon the return from America of Mr. Johnson, member of parliament. Many families are still leaving Belfast. The working classes expross great indignation in-dignation at the conduct of magistrates magis-trates in dealing with the rioters. London, 22. Several buildings were fired last night in Belfast. The magistrates mag-istrates have petitioned the lord lieutenant lieu-tenant to place Belfast under the peace preservation act. There was a heavy riot there last night The rioter Moore has been identified as the murderer mur-derer of a policeman. Several rioters havo been sentenced to prison for one and two months but aggravated cases will be sent to higher courts. |
