Show Terrh'ic Storm. The State ot New York has been lately visited by most terrific storms. One of those recently passed over Poughkeepsie. The heat had been excessive all day and tho atmosphere unusually sultry. The clouds bad lain along the Cats-kills Cats-kills from morniDg, gathering strength, till at night-fall they moved up the horizon, streaks of chain lightning at times fringing the lower edge of tho inky black mass, and illuminating the river for ten or fifteen miles. Then followed the broad, fitful flashes of heat lightniog, accompanied by deep, heavy, distant thunder. At twenty minutes past seven, in the evening, the storm burst upon the city. The rain fell in torrents and the lightning Sashed in forked tongues and jagged chains, and the rattling and stunniDg thunderclaps echoed as if every flash had struck some object near at hand. Balls of firo shot into the telegraph offices, exploding like musketry and driving the operators from their instruments. instru-ments. Streaks of lightning ran down the railway track, and the air seemed impregnated with sulphur. The storm lasted nearly an hour, and the lightning seemed of all colors. 2s ot a building was touched, although the peaplcwere much alarmed, and at nine o'clock the moon rose bright above the clouds.
