Show AHLJtlCA JOltli ItAlLHOAD. American Fork, August 21st, li72. Editors Utrald: News in our little town is, under the best of circumstances, rather scarce; hence it is almost impossible to get together to-gether sufficient to predicato an article for a paper upon. We have at this tiiue, however, that which attracts our attention, in the immenso amount of ! railroad iron and other material for the 1 American Fork railroad. "The sight of I the locomotive, as it majestically mov-1 mov-1 ed up our main street, excited a great deal of curiosity, especially among the I hundreds who had never bef'oro seen a , locomotive. The euperintendeat put it on tho track yesterday, and made the first trip under the immediato ' superintendence of Mr. Paratt, The building of this road is certainly a praiseworthy enterprise, especially as it is an individual undertaking. The ' grade up the canyon will be in ; many places five feet to the hundred; ! a stump or heavy grade ; yet it is be- lieved by the engineer, Col. Gray, to be a practicable one. Major,Wilkcs, the managing director and Col. Gray, I the chi 'f engineer and superintendent, are both gentlemen of urbanity, official ; etfieieuey.and gentlemanly deportment, and weii deserving the high trust ioj-i ioj-i poed upon them in this tedious un-: un-: dt-rtaking. it is expected thatthiswork ! will bo completed within eix weeks. Wo think here, that when tho Utah Southern and the American Fork roads conuect at this place, our city will be improved, im-proved, we hope, to the benefit of our citizens. We yet have the whisky saloon here with the usual amount of whisky broils, sore heads &. This saloon is kept by a Mr. Smith, a man of unexceptional character for truth and sobriety. Business is dull ; . whcLherhot, crops fine, and health good for doctors. IfE-M. |
