Most of the witnesses examined were firm in the belief that the officers of-thc of-thc vessel did every thing in then' power to save the lives of passengers, although some n'cre forced to admit that they did not see the Captain or mates after the alarm was given. fi'he officers of the Potomac Ferry company, com-pany, to which the vessel belonged, arc busy hunting up witnesses to testify tes-tify that the officers of the yesscl were at their posts when the cry of lire sounded through the steamer. The testimony of some witnesses, especially es-pecially colored people, was such as to leave an impression on to minds of many attending the investigation, that 'they IuJ been tampered with so as to exonerate the "oiiicos frpm nil blame. |
