Show LITTLE COTTONWOOD LETTER. ml .Tltiiinx Siiminurj tor the Week fciiriinc Sept. 1 Ith. Currc-.-r-'irltrco of tlif Hn;u.K Alta, &pt. , Yesterday I made a flying visit lc, American Fork Caofm, and vUiud the Live Yankee and Wyoming mines. From the general appearance surrounding tlie Live Yankee, I should call it either a lively stock ranch or an embryo railroad village. Everything Every-thing about the place betokens an air of prosjK?rity and vigor. There is a large double log cabin situated on the bench, one end of which serves tlie double purpose of kitchen and dining room, while the other side isdovoU-d to tiie storing of supplies for the ramp. The commissary department below tho cabin is a number of tent which serve the miners as sleeping apartments. On the brow of tlie gulch, above the mine, is the po?t-otlicc po?t-otlicc and sleeping apartment for the superintendent. This is built picket-fashion, picket-fashion, out of hewn lopi, and is a substantial and comfortable building. The leduo is situated in what, is known as the Mary -Ellen gulch. It was located in 1-Si0, and is almo-t directly opposite the celebrated Miller Mil-ler nunc. A small stream of water flows down the gulch, having for its bed an almost solid body of minora!. At tho discovery point in the gulch, a body of oro reveals itself fully liny foot in width, and principally galena. The ore on the surface and hi the tunnel shows large quantities of pyrites py-rites oi'iron, which assay largely in gold. The imn disappears, as depth is gained in the shatts, and runs into galena nnd carbonates, ine mine is developed by a tunnel, aud two shafts, all of which show nothing but continuous and solid masses of . min-oral. min-oral. The ledge has been stripped and traced to a distance of throe hundred hun-dred feet. The mine is incorporated in Detroit, Mich., under the name of the Detroit & Utah Silver Mining Co. It is a valuable property and one that will eventually declare large--dividends, if wc can trust to the evidence evi-dence of our own souses. . The Wyoming mine is located on the summit of the Miller Hill, a few hundred feet north of the Millerminc. The location was made in September, 1S70, by Chambers & Majors. It is now owned and being worked by Chambers, Majors, and Dr. Fowler, and is not incorporated. It is devel-. oped by- two shafts a, ml . a tunnel. The discovery shaft is SO feet in depth.' In working this shaft, quite a large quantity of mineral was extracted which now lies on the dump. A tunnel has been run to a distance of 110 feet, connecting with the discovers discov-ers shaft. Most of tho distance the tunnel has been timbered. The formation for-mation is porphyry nnd quartaite, very seamy and loose. Ninety feet from the mouth of tho tunnel, n. large deposit of pre was struck, which continued jn scams of from six inches to five feet in width for twenty feet. One hundred feet from the mouth of; the tunnel ts a vertical shall sunk to ! a distance of forty-six feet. Preparations Prepara-tions are now being made to drift from the bottom of this shaft on the the ledge. The property has been work etl by private individuals and the ore already on the dumps will be almost al-most suih'cient to pay lor tlie development. devel-opment. Oyer twenty-'fivo tons 'df ore ore sacked ready for shipment. A wagon road can beeabily constructed construct-ed to 'the loot of the mountain, within with-in two hundred yards of the mouth of the tunnel. The sconeiy of American Fork is grand, peculiar, and sublime. The shrubs, trees, and flowers are fast verging into the sere and yellow leaf. The Autumn days have come lor us and I can now chronicle the most delightful weather ever experienced in the Cotton woods. The shipments for the Flagstatl" for the week were sixty tons per day. The Vallejo shipped forty tons for the week. The Windsor Group shipped three tons per day, " The 'Highland -Chief shipped -five ton i.enbie.' " ; - - Tho Emma shipped 107 tons for the week. Tins nunc does not increase in-crease much but keeps up a good geu oral average. Tlie Davenport mine shipped twenty-five tons per day. The ore shipped from this mine is of high grade. The Grizzly mine lias again resumed re-sumed shipping, but made lio ship- moots for the week. -' The- Wellington shipped eight tons per tiny. This company has commenced com-menced the construction of a largo and commodious" house located in the basin oi llat, just below the mine. The Oxford ' & Geneva ' mines ', shipped fifteen tons for the week. They' have just commenced shipping ship-ping daily. Their record next week promises to be a good one. The Real ifcl3enson,the Richmond, the Prince of Wales, and other mines in Big Cottonwood are shipping ore daily, but we cannot get tho statistics. statis-tics. .- Last night. considerable consternation consterna-tion was caused in our usually quiet city by a loud explosion that shook the foundations of the canon from centre to circumference. Judging from the number of white robed-somethings robed-somethings that appeared in the streets the females must have been frightened. About the. time of the explosion, it was very cloudy, tlie clouds hanging very low on the mountains. The query is, what was it? Martiu Harknoss says it was an aroolite that burst a,boye the town. He is out this morning prospecting for fragment. Wc advance no theories. theo-ries. It was a loud explosion, sounding sound-ing very much like a Mississippi, steamboat explosion. i-Tue Good Templars' ball was a splendid success. It was the finest party ever given in Alta, and rcllects great credit upon its manager. I will have more to say of it, anon. , Tho impression, having got abroad that the restaurant of D. II. Simmons - is closed, I will remark that the restaurant res-taurant is closed, but that the huiise is still open for lodgers who can be accommodated with olmm beds and comfortable rooms.
