Vn Monday Mon-day night the vessel ran on a sand bar, nlmut fifteen miles from Sable Island lighthouse, where she remained remain-ed all night and until about two I o'clock the next day, before she was got off, after throwing overboard C the most of her freight. As soon ;is 1 she struck, boats wore lowered, the " third officer, with five men, left for shore. No provisions were put on ixwd but a barrel of water was taken , by one of the men. As soon as the j J U'limiiii'j got off the bar, it was discovered dis-covered she was leaking, nnd the pumps were set going. A boat was sent ashore for the third mate's party, but it could not be heard of or seen. Alter waiting till nearly midnight tho enptain got up steam and set out. Nothing has been since heard of the missing boat or of the men who composed com-posed the crew. It was imite dark when the lxat left the steamer, and it is probable that she attempted to land and was swamped, and all hands lost. Fortunately tho weather was ftiir, so that the steamer was not broken in pieces before she was lightened light-ened and doated off the bar by the rising tide. |
