Show Purim. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week are days held sacred among the Israelites, as the festival fes-tival of Purim, in the Jewish month of Adar, when the enemies of the Jews were overpowered and destroyed by Mordccai and when Haman and his ten sons were hanged upon the gallows gal-lows by king Ahasuerus at the request of Either the queen. The word Purim is derived from the Jewish word "pur," meaoing lot, because Haman deeided by lot to consume and destroy the Jews. Yesterday, tho first of the days of the Purim festival, is observed by the strictly orthodox with fasting and prayer. Tc-iay ia ooe of gladness and feasting, a good day in which congratulations con-gratulations are given and appropriate services held in the tabernacles, masked mask-ed balls and gatherings of joy taking place ia the evening. To-night the ball of the Ladies' Hebrew Benevolent 1 society is given at the Liberal Insti-1 Insti-1 tute. It is commanded that these I days be remembered and kept through out every generation, every family, every province, and every city, and the memory of queen Esther is held in holy reverence by tho Jews everywhere. |
