The scene in the house of commons last night whon the defeat of the ministry Irish university bill was announced is indescribable. The excitement was intense whilo the opponents of tho measure indulged in tumultuous cheers. Among those in the stranger's gallury,which was crowded crowd-ed duriou tho debate, were tho Prinoe of Wales, Princess Louise, and Prince Christian. Tho Scotch and Welsh members supported tho bill, the Catholics Cath-olics were unanimous in their opposi tion to it. After thff announcement ot the result, Gladstone aroso and said, tho vote just given is certainly of grave character. As tho house never wishes to continue its deliberations when the existence of tho government is in doubt I move an adjournment until Thursday. The motion was carried. In consequence of the lato hour at which the result was reached, editorial comments in the morning journals are meagre and restrained. The Advertiser Adver-tiser and Standard are jubilant over the rejection, i'be Advertiser says that it cannot imagine that oven Gladstone will stoop to endeavor to remain in office. The Telegraph considers the resignation of the ministry exceedingly probable. The Times doubts if tho cabinet will take such a course. The bill did not receive the vote of a Binglo conservative member. Forty-seven liberals, of whom thirty-six were Irishmen, Irish-men, voted against iu Fifteen Irish members voted for it, and seventeen members, including Isaac BjD, the member from Limerick:, were absent. Forty memberB participated in the debate. de-bate. John Bright, Jacob Bright, his brother, aud the marquis of Lome, supported tho government. |
