Show More Nimill-1'ox, One of the worst reports concerning concern-ing small-pox, indicating most reprehensible repre-hensible carelessness, gained publicity pub-licity only yesterday; and there, was a difiiculty, even last night, in ascertaining ascer-taining the facts. A family named Shcpard, from Michigan, the father anil mother being the parents of Mrs, Geo. H. Taylor, of tho 14tU ward, with whom they are residing, became aflected with the disease, it is believed be-lieved through the old gentleman fondling with a, child of Mr. James i Bourne, in whose family the disease made fatal ravages some time since. Mr. JShepanl was taken sick about two weeks ago; subsequently Ids wife, ami a daughter a sister to Mrs. Bourne wcro also taken sick, and the old lady died on. Monday night. The younger lady is still very sick; the old gentleman is recovering. Dr. Mcik was the attending physician, but. he was unable to decide as to tho cliarac- tcr of the dwease. Dr. Benedict was called in to see the suflui'crs, but on his first visit he did not consider the disease sulliciently developed to pronounce pro-nounce upon it definitely. On a subsequent visit he declared that, it was small-pox, and gave quarantine instructions, that they might, nndcr- ; stand what was required. It appears ! these instructions were neglected, and it was not until a tier the ease proved 1 fatal that Judge Clinton, quarantine physician, was informal of the situa- : tion of atlairs. Yesterday he visited the place, anil imposed quarantine restrictions, he in formal our reporter, but last evening we heard that no such regulations were being observed. This is a grave afliiir, demanding thorough investigation, and the promptest measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Tho quarantine ordinance has been comparatively ignored, ig-nored, disease has been permitted to spread, no one yet knows with how fa till and fearful results, iind those who have failed to meet the requirements require-ments of tho health law of the city, should be held amenable. |
