Show Thk Delnvek Atirji, of Saturday. announce;) the arrival in Unit city of Peace Commissioner Brunot. who has finally suceevdi-d hi closing a treaty with the Utc Indians, of Colo-nwlo, Colo-nwlo, for the cession hack to govern-; nunt of the San Juan mining country, coun-try, in the southwestern portion of the Territory. The agreement specifies spe-cifies that the treaty shall cover all of the mineral portion of San Juan, a section sixty nrilesin width hysnventy-tivc hysnventy-tivc in length, and containing some three and a half million acres. None of tiic land suitflblo for agricultural purposes is covered by the agreement. The successful completion of this treaty is of the utmost importance to miners. Many mines have ulroady been opened in the San Juan mountains moun-tains and serious troubles with the Indians In-dians have been expected for some time. This is the second atU'inpt of Peace Commissioners to settle the difficulty peaceably, a council of last year having failed completely. Delegations Dele-gations from six tribes including the White Kiwr and Uintah Utes were present, the council being presided over by chief I' re. This mining district dis-trict is considered one of the richest in Colorado, and its development will tb II cm rapidly. |
