Show Theatre. A large and brilliant audience- last night greeted the first appearance at our Theatre of Miss Fanny Cathcart ind Mr. George iMrrell; and the lady and gentleman were well received upon being recognized by the audience. au-dience. Mr. Darrcll's version of Wilkic Collins' story jjf " Man and Wife " wiis most effectively produced. Miss .Cat heart's rendering of Anne Sylvester was a model of quiet acting, without straining for effect or lap-trap lap-trap of any !li!lfl: The lady has a fine presence, a pleasing .musical voice, and enunciates clearly so that even' word is distinctly heard, Anne Sylvester did not afford scope for her fine histrionic abilities, and she showed her good sense by not attempt ing to make the part anything more thaD the author intended it to be. Mr. Darrcll's Geoflry Delamayn was a fine piece of character acting. He has evidently made the part a study, and his conception, though differing dif-fering widely from that of others, gives a better idea of what the author intended to make the man than any we have seen. The other parts were well sustained throughout and the scenic efTects and tableaux were very effective. Taken altogether the play was a success, and the renditions of Miss Cathcart and Mr. Darrell were brilliant triumphs of art. "Man and Wife" will be repeated to-night for the last time, and all who desire to sec this great creation of one of the greatest authors of the day, rendered by such artistes as Miss Cathcart and Darrell, with the surroundings sur-roundings which our excellent Thea-tro Thea-tro affords, should attend. |
