Show I Silver Payments. Washington, 27. The Secretary of the Treasury will issue an order to commence payments in silver at New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore Balti-more and other leading cities, where there are assistant treasurers, or des- j ignated depositories, to-morrow. In no case will more than five dollars 1 be paid to any one person. There is at present $500,000 in silver coin in the possession of government, which will last some weeks, but the work of coining will be continued though not: more:rapidly than heretofore. There is an abundance of stiver bars in the country ancLtlie capacity of the mints is sufiicient for the coinage of about $15, 000,000 yearly in silver, without interfering with other coinage. With the exception of that in California there is but little coin in the country now not owned by government. |
