The first returns for the preliminary elections for members of the Cortes, indicate that the Ministerialists Minis-terialists arc victorious in twenty seven chief towns and lol districts, and the Republicans in ten chief towns and fourteen districts. Nine towns and six districts are equally divided. The Republicans issued a manifesto the morning of the election, urging their party to rally to the polls and fight the battle against monarchy in each election district, and put forth all their strength to rout its supporters. Europe, it declares, de-clares, awaits the result, which will strengthen fho cause of democracy throughout the continent. Madrid, 20. Returns from the provinces pro-vinces show that two-thi'ds of the successful suc-cessful candidates to tho Cortes are members of the government party; and that the radicals supported the government govern-ment at the polls. |
