Show IN Wlllt'il COUNTY? l'uovo City, Utah, August 24, 1672. Editors Ihrahl: For some two months past the question ques-tion aa to whether Silver Lake (Jily and mines, in American Fork canyuti, arc eituatcd in Utah or t'alt Jakc counties, has heen agitated by a nuru- I bcr of our citizens. While at the suielfcr in American Fork canyon about a month hdcc, 1 learned that it was a "mixed" question ques-tion with the oificcra of that district and owners of mines aa to said location. To me this lias been a source of surprise; sur-prise; for when I read the lUth section sec-tion of the act of the legislative assctn- bly defining the boundaries of counties and locating counLy seats, which rcad.s as follows., viz.; "All that portion of the Territory boundud south by Juab and Sanpete counties, west of the summit sum-mit of the range between Cedar and Hush valleys, north by the summit of tho cross range between the Oquirrh and Wasatch mountains, cast by the summit of tho range passing around tho bead of Dry, American Fork, .Battle, .Bat-tle, Hobble, and Spanish Fork creeks, and a line drawn due north nnd south across Provo river at a point one-fourth of a mile above ibe north fork of Deer creek of paid river, to intersect each extremity of said line of the summit sum-mit of the last naind range, is hereby made and named Utah counly, with county ecat at Provo;" there seems no room for doubt in my mind as to the said city and mines being in Utah county. 1 also find that on the Sib day of March, 1S71, the county court of Utah county, being its regular March term, organized a precinct, the boundaries of which should include all the American Ameri-can Fork canyon and lands drained by the American Fork creek and its tributaries. At the August clectiou ot '1871, tho citizens of said precinct elected Henry Kicbter justice of the peace for said precinct, who duly qualified as such officer, and tho governor gov-ernor issued his commission. 1 also find that a number of mining deeds lor mines in said precinct havo been recorded in Utah county, and also that the property iu said precinct has been assessed by the assessor of Utah county. While at American Fork canyon I learned l'rom parties interested inter-ested that this matter ia a great source of annoyance, and in several cases had worked detrimental to their interest, in that purchasers could not bo satis-tied satis-tied with abstracts of mines situated In uncertain county locations. 1 am informed that efforts have been , made to establish said precinct or. locality lo-cality in Salt Lake county, tbo results of which will cause litigation and cx-poubcj cx-poubcj aa the act above mentioned seems so plain "that he who runs may read" and be positivo as to bis whereabouts where-abouts when in said canyon. It is for tho purpose of bringing this matter beforo the proper olbocrs and the interested public, that I presume on making these statements. Respectfully, W. N. DUSENBERJIY. |
