Show Fear asd Trembling. There was trembling at th knee joints and weakness weak-ness of the spine, jef-terdar, felt by certain members of the legal profession whose names shall be nameless. The third district court had appointed a committee to inquire into whether a counselor at the bar was in the habit of taking his "tod" too frequently. This was bringing matters to a foens a point so sharp that it pricked in several places. What if "smiling" inordinately in-ordinately is a crime at the bar, punishable punish-able by the court, will not the same rale apply to occasional, or repeated, -visits to the midnight sirens of Commercial Btreet? And may not another committee com-mittee ba ordered to inquire whether other members of the bar are not in the habit of indulging in a quiet game of faro ? While still others, for regular and open breaches of the Sabbath, may be held liable to have a committee appointed ap-pointed to go on their tracks and briDg them to book for disregard of tho decencies de-cencies which should surreund Christian Chris-tian gentlemen. This was the kind of feeling entertained yesterday by a number of the fifty or so counselors who grace the bar of the third district court with their presence and abilities. Go for them, judge, and the Herald will sustain you. Purify the bar, and keep it purified. But how about hunting up evidence relating to the private character of members of the bar, and making the court the censor of their lives ? And ia the boundary line of offense where drunkeness and villifying the court come in, leaving gambling, lasoiv. cohab., and those other peccadilloes as little indulgences, venial in legal gentlemen? |
