A great many people do not t ikean active part in political n flairs; they permit si -lf-cnnstituted leaders to act for them; and in too many instances tliey follow blindly the directions of of caucuses that save tin ni the trouble of thinking relative to or moving in the matter of being honestly represented. repre-sented. It is because of this that so many specious knaves obtain ollicc; for in their interest caucuses and conventions con-ventions are manipulated; and the political wire-pullers that govern such meetings have no desire to be shorn of the authority they have acquired by years of study into the intricacies ut'directing t'ue votes of the masses. The Democracy can have no hope of carrying carry-ing Ohio; they have no hope of carrying the country; yet many of the leaders of that party w ill oppose every plan, proportion, or movement, to secure a victory in behalf of honesty and true patriotism, unless it comes under the name of a moribund organiz ition,:vnd of political standard hearers whom the great public measurably dread. The professional politicians of Ihitb partus have become alike. "Rule or ruin" is their motto. They will write platforms that sound sweetly in the ears of nn easily deluded peo-phyuid peo-phyuid hold them worth less than the paper they are written on; they will make protections of patriotism and honesty until tliey secure oflice, and then enter upon the work of plunder with an assiduity tlwit ensures success; suc-cess; and helieving that the " rank and lile " of paities is only created to he used by them, tliey attack every effort ef-fort on the part of the people to secure se-cure a reform in government as rebellion re-bellion against their recognized righto us leaders and rulers. It is time the people should think and net lor themselves, and dispense with these self-suflieicnt demagogues, who ape the diameter of statesmen, and would destroy the Republic for a live thou-and dollar oflice. |
