Show A HEAVY UEKAllTER. New York, 19. Tho ' Times" says the amount of the defalcations of Jas. J. Johnston, chief clerk in the stamp division of the assistant treasurer's office, of-fice, though not precisely ascertained, cannot exceed $IS5,000, and it may be considerably less. It is not fully known how the fraud was accomplished and concealed, but it is probable that Johnston John-ston made false reports of stamps, which wero not examioed into with promptitude and so the fraud became extensive before any suspicion was awakened. Johnston was some years ago connected with the Albany "Argus." "Ar-gus." Detectives are in search of him. He has been a man of great respectability, respecta-bility, and it will probably be found that he has frittered away his mooes in Wall street. |
